The choice of Capuchin Father Joseph Oudeman as an auxiliary bishop for Brisbane is one many in the archdiocese will welcome.
Bishop-elect Oudeman has proved to be a deeply faithful and compassionate pastor in his time in Brisbane.
He is a spiritual man with an excellent pastoral sense which will no doubt endear him to the many people he is yet to meet and prepare him for the challenges that await him.
It is also significant that he is Dutch-born, a boon for the many migrants from around the world who have made Brisbane their home.
As a Capuchin, his mission has been to extend a caring hand to those migrants.
In his new episcopal role, many others will discover this warm hand of faith and support.
