RE Richard Tiainen’s letter “Alcohol is a real killer” (CL 30/9/12), we cannot blame alcohol for human misbehaviour.
It is surely we who misbehave as we will drink to excess.
It is my decision to drink to excess; I have not and I will not.
It is as simple as that.
If we are to say our moral fibre is becoming weaker then the door is open to those who touch this area in our life.
And this area is in the hands of our priesthood and in all that the Church holds for us, no-one else.
It is here and here alone that our moral life is considered, advised, supported and directed.
No-one else is entitled to tell me who I am, what I should be, what I should do.
The law of the land can only bring punishment ultimately on harm that I do to my neighbour.
The licensing of alcohol premises is open to regulation, possibly even the control of individual sales.
Alcohol has a valuable place in our life, used wisely it is a blessing.
Cars have a valuable place in our lives, used wisely they are a blessing.
