AFFLUENCE and homelessness are odd conditions for one nation to have in large doses together.
But at least, when we in Australia are blessed and afflicted with both at once, there is hope. Affluence can have a chance to alleviate homelessness.
Rising interest rates affect us all in different ways. For some, there’s the effect on investments, for others it means lifestyle adjustments – less expensive holidays, fewer restaurant meals and luxury items – but for others, it is much more serious.
As St Vincent de Paul Society members can testify, it can mean that some people will lose the roof over their heads. Our political leaders must make sure the latter are the ones who take precedence in policy decisions.
As a Church, that’s where we can keep the focus.
