IT is with great joy that I read of the appointment of Archbishop Vincent Nichols as the next Archbishop of Westminster effective May 21, 2009, despite the strident opposition of some of his fellow bishops in England and Wales.
Archbishop Nichols has demonstrated great leadership qualities both as an Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster to Cardinal Basil Hume and as Archbishop of Birmingham.
He is a man of action who has demonstrated that he is not afraid to stand up for the teachings of the Catholic faith against government and their agencies (eg the BBC).
His rise to this important position mirrors that of Cardinal Clancy who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop to Cardinal Freeman who he succeeded as Archbishop of Sydney after a short stint as Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn.
May God bless Archbishop Nichols in this important and responsible office.
