MORE than 1523 young people provide a hand up to those in need through the various youth programs at St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland.

Guided by the words of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, who was a student when he founded the Society, these young Vincentians and volunteers deliver programs and services to assist those in need.

“Be kind and love, for love is your first gift to the poor. They will appreciate your kindness and love more than anything else you can bring them,” said Blessed Frederic Ozanam.

State youth manager Cassandra Bull said helping the poor was at the heart of the good works the Society delivered.

“We have programs like Nightriders and Buddies Days that offer families, elderly and other children facing tough times with friendship, support, a warm meal and relief,” she said.

“The people we connect with are often isolated in community through loneliness, a lack of family or friendship support.

“Our Nightrider members each spend 1-2 hours per week providing food to those doing it tough, but it’s the precious moment of a meal with friends that breaks down barriers and creates change.

“In this time our younger Vincentians are connecting with new friends, getting to know this persons story, sharing in their plans and goals and journeying with them as they create a better life.”

She said the Buddies Program took disadvantaged children out for a day of fun and friendship, pairing them with a volunteer to hang out with for the day.

New members and volunteers are always welcome.
