ST Vincent de Paul Society Queensland is calling on the local community to support its annual Christmas Appeal.
Wavell Heights local member Marion Chisholm said with the support of financial donors they could make a difference for those facing tough times.
“From now until Christmas, our conference will notice an increase in calls from people in need for extra support to get through the holidays,” she said.
“The cost of rent, electricity and transport is stretching budgets, which sometimes can’t cope with the added stress of the holiday period.
“Last year our conference helped more than 1500 people in our Wavell Heights community.
“We also help at least 40 local families with a Christmas hamper and toys for the children who would otherwise go without.”
Mrs Chisholm said the financial donations led to a significant hand-up during times of struggle.
“A few months ago a single mum we had helped in 2005 stopped me at the local Chermside shops and we got to talking about her life since and my work with the society,” she said.
“She thanked me for the hamper and support we had given her during her hard times.
“It was a lifesaver to her, she told me, when she was going through a tough time. Back on her feet, she now donates back to help the next person who needs support.”
The society’s Christmas Appeal is supported by the hamper collections and toy drives by local primary schools and the Department of Transport and Main Roads office in Fortitude Valley.
“Financial donations are important as we can use the funds raised to provide direct support or pay for much needed services that a struggling family, single or elderly person desperately needs but couldn’t afford.”
