Bishop Joseph Oudeman
CONGRATULATIONS Bishop John, as you celebrate 65 years of priestly life and ministry. Forty years ago you were also chosen to be bishop, in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Your election to be a bishop at that time was an endorsement of the quality of your priestly ministry. Outstanding was your love for and contribution to social justice issues; your love of people and your concern for the poor and the marginalised.
I was happy to take your place, when you retired at 75 for a well-earned rest. I thank you for the inspiration of your example, the fraternal support you have given me since, and for your friendship. Let us thank the Lord for the many blessings of our lives. Ad multosannos!

Fr Clem Hodge
AS parish priest of Stafford for 14 years Bishop John Gerry inspired a wonderful group of people with a vision focused on the teaching of the Second Vatican Council.
He encouraged the role of the laity in so many ways.
He once said that Stafford helped to shape him.
I know that he helped to shape Stafford.
It was my privilege to follow him as parish priest.

I HAVE known and worked with Bishop John for over 30 years. During this time both with Catholic Social Response and Centacare, he has supported a wide range of initiatives which have positively touched the lives of many, within the broader community as well as the Catholic community. His legacy in supporting families as well as those who are vulnerable is immense; and always within the context that each of us is made in the image and likeness of our God.
This context, constantly stated by him, is central to the ongoing essence and spirit of Centacareís mission and values today.
In addition, at a personal level, Bishop John has continued to be a wonderful spiritual mentor to me, for which I am most grateful.

Having begun his studies for the priesthood at Banyo in 1943, Bishop John Gerry is the first alumnus from the Queensland Seminary to have been ordained a bishop.
His life and ministry are marked by strength of faith, kindness of heart and generosity of spirit.
