CAPUCHIN Franciscans shared their love of Jesus Christ and the spirit of their life in the way of St Francis with about 80 young people in the Royal National Park, NSW, recently.
The young people from NSW, Victoria and Queensland participated in the first National Capuchin Franciscan Youth Fest from June 26-29.
The youth fest featured international Capuchin speakers Bishop John Corriveau (former General Minister of the order) from Canada; Fr Paul Dressler, of Washington DC; and Australian friars Fr Gary Devery and Fr Robert Stewart.
Many of the young friars from around the country were also there to animate and lend their courage and support.
The program included dynamic talks, daily Mass, Adoration, the Divine Office, games, activities, sharing groups, a talent night and live music.
It was an opportunity for young people to celebrate and grow in their Catholic faith through the influence of St Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan charism.
The theme was “Rebuild My Church” – the words God addressed to St Francis as he prayed before the San Damiano Crucifix.
A spokesman for the Capuchins said the youth fest was a joyful four days of faith, fun and inspiration – described by some of the young people as “amazing”, “awesome”, “the best” and “overwhelming”.
It was the product of the combined efforts of the Capuchin Friars and the Capuchin Young Adults – a group of young people in Sydney who meet with the friars every Sunday evening for Adoration (with Evening Prayer), Mass, dinner and formation/activities.
“It is hoped that the energy of this young group will spread also to the establishment of similar groups at the Capuchin presences in Melbourne and South Brisbane,” the spokesman said.
“All are already looking forward to next year’s follow-up event.”
