CATHOLIC bishops attending the Oceania bishops conference raised discussion on the overdue issue of “overwhelming religious illiteracy” in Catholic schools due to the loss of Catholic identity in the formative years of upbringing.
In other words Catholic schools have fallen short over the years in their basic charter of evangelism.
Bishop Geoffrey Jarrett also stated that “ordinary parish life” was not filling this vacuum.
We have been crying out for years for our children and grandchildren, who attended Catholic schools, to be provided with the sacraments and attending regular Mass during their schooling.
If we, as former Catholic school graduates, hadn’t been provided with the environment and encouragement of school Mass and sacraments, I’m sure many of us wouldn’t be attending both today.
We need to be more vocal and encourage our parish priests and Catholic schools to reintroduce both school Masses and the sacraments.
