BRISBANE journalists and photojournalists were honoured for their professionalism and ethical reporting at the Archbishop John Bathersby “Common Good” Print Media Awards on May 18 at the Francis Rush Centre in Brisbane.
Prizes were awarded in the Best News, Best Feature, Best Photo, Best Education and Community Service categories.
The Courier-Mail effectively swept the field, being publisher of the winning pieces in all categories.
The full list of winners were: Tonya Turner for best news story, Craig Dawes for best feature, John Wilson for best photograph, Elizabeth Allen for best education story and The Courier-Mail in the best community service category for stories by Tuck Thompson and Margaret Wenham.
Speaking on the night, Archbishop Bathersby told of his own connections to the media, starting with his father’s correspondence work for the Warwick Daily News and continuing today with his nephews currently employed in both the print and electronic media.
Special guest speaker and founder of the Jschool of Journalism, Professor John Henningham, endorsed the concept of acknowledging quality journalism that sought the truth and worked for the public’s benefit.
