THE St Vincent de Paul Society is joining forces with the Queensland government to deliver about 150 social and affordable homes in the state’s south east.
In the midst of housing crisis, Vinnies is providing land for three major projects to go ahead, with construction to start in 2024 after community consultation.
A total of 27 homes will be built in Newton (Toowoomba), 60 homes in Walkervale (Bundaberg) and 60 homes in Nerang.
Vinnies Queensland CEO Kevin Mercer said the new homes would be a great relief for Queensland families in need.
“All across the state, our members have been working hard to help those struggling to secure affordable housing in their communities,” Mr Mercer said.
“This partnership will allow us to provide a safe and secure place to call home for 147 Queensland families and individuals.
“Through the State Government working with support organisations like Vinnies, we can provide more than just a place to live, but also ensure residents have access to wrap-around support for furniture, food and other essentials to provide hope and security in the long-term.
Queensland’s new housing minister Meaghan Scanlon said the partnership would see the government contribute $58.65 million through its QuickStarts QLD program and Vinnies contribute more than $12 million, including the land.
QuickStarts QLD is set to see 3,265 homes commenced across the state before 30 June 2025 and is part of a $5 billion investment – the largest in Queensland’s history – into social and affordable housing.
It will help deliver an estimated 13,500 homes by 2027.
