POPE Francis has emerged from colon surgery and “reacted well”, Holy See Press Office director Matteo Bruni said.
“Admitted in the afternoon to the A. Gemelli Hospital, the Holy Father underwent surgery in the evening for a diverticular stenosis of the colon,” he said.
The surgery, which was performed under general anaesthetic, was scheduled after Pope Francis was diagnosed with a narrowing of the large intestine.
Mr Bruni announced last week that the weekly general audience would be suspended for July and resume in August.
It is the first time Pope Francis has been admitted to hospital since he became pope in 2013.
Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis’ health has not been cause for much concern.
There is no information about how long Pope Francis would remain in hospital, though Sunday Angelus and blessings are expected to go ahead as normal.
Pope Francis is 84 years old.
