BETHLEHEM, West Bank (CNS): A student dormitory at Bethlehem University was hit by gunfire twice in two weeks, with bullets entering a student’s dorm room during the latest incident.
In a letter to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Teresian Sister Ana Garcia, head of the St Teresa Student Hostel, said, “It is unacceptable that a university residence full of young Palestinian ladies studying at Bethlehem University and expatriate staff working with the church could be a target for an exchange of gunfire.
“Once again we denounce such a blatant show of force, especially when we repeatedly hear that the protection of civilians is the aim of military action,” she said.
The patriarchate owns the hostel at the university, run by the Christian Brothers.
Sr Garcia said a shooting last month left dorm residents without water for two days after a water pipe was destroyed.
The bullets hit a computer room and the sitting room of the residence, destroying walls, windows, metal window shutters, solar heating panels, furniture and curtains, she said.
Three nuns and some 30 residents were hiding under a stairwell and in the basement at the time of the shooting and were unhurt, Sister Garcia added.
