ARCHBISHOP John Bathersby has called on Catholics in Brisbane archdiocese to embrace three vital signs of faith – Jesus, communion and mission – as they prepare for the archdiocesan Synod Assembly in May.
‘All three must be present in dynamic relationship if we are to experience the fullness of Christian life and have the impact in the world that Jesus Christ desires,’ he told Synod Assembly members attending their second preparation day at Clairvaux Mackillop College, Upper Mt Gravatt last Saturday.
‘The absence of any one of the three, in us or our communities, robs our Christianity of its vitality and damages our capacity to communicate an authentic, challenging and compelling Christian vision to the wider world.’
The archbishop said that for most people, God appeared either distant or not at all.
‘Many people may not lead lives of ‘quiet desperation’ spoke of by C.S. Lewis, but they do lead spiritually deprived lives, tinged with their own particular brand of sadness.’
