Today’s news headlines for the busy Catholic | January 06, 2015.

  1. Queensland premier Campbell Newman announced a snap election for January 31 at a press conference this morning.
  2. Pope Francis named 15 new cardinals on Sunday, including New Zealand’s fourth cardinal, who heard the news firstly through text messages from friends and family.
  3. South Australian bushfires continue to ravage the Adelaide Hills, so far claiming 26 houses, with devastation hitting Victoria and Western Australia.
  4. Archaeologists in the Holy Land believe they have uncovered the site where Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate may have taken place.
  5. Pope Francis has urged Christians to “make peace” this year, and look to Mary, queen of peace, for inspiration in the new year.
