CATHOLIC social teaching figures prominently in an Australian Catholic Commission for Employment Relations (ACCER) discussion paper on the Federal Government’s proposed industrial relations reforms.
The paper deals in depth with the Catholic Church’s stance on the Federal Government’s proposed industrial relations changes.
ACCER executive officer John Ryan said the 61-page paper was meant to stimulate discussion about the proposed changes and inform people of the Church’s reasons for its concerns.
Mr Ryan said ACCER had written to Federal Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Kevin Andrews, with four major areas of concern and the discussion paper presented the intellectual case against such changes.
He said the Church had been a strong advocate of a family wage but the proposed method of setting the minimum wage under the changes was reported to be on the basis of a single adult worker.
Mr Ryan said a further briefing paper would be prepared once the Government’s proposed changes were tabled.
