BISHOP Geoffrey Jarrett of Lismore plans to pull out all stops for the centenary of St Carthage’s Cathedral with a nine-day parish outreach mission involving 30 Sydney seminarians.
The team of seminarians, led by Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney Julian Porteous, will join National Evangelical Team (NET) members and the laity to engage with the community on all levels.
The mission “Open the Doors to Christ” is designed to take the Church to the “heart of marketplace” with public talks on a range of Catholic faith issues occurring daily in the Mecca Cafe from 4pm.
It runs from June 23 to July 1 at a range of venues including Trinity Catholic College, Mary Gilhooley’s Irish Pub and Restaurant and the Lismore Worker’s Club.
There will also be a coffee tent with “free real cappuccino” at a central location, probably in Majellan Street.
Bishop Jarrett said he had decided to organise the mission, in conjunction with the Catholic Renewal Evangelisation Diocesan Office (CREDO), to put the Church back squarely in the centre of community life.
A varied program will include a Marian procession through the streets of Lismore; talks on a range of topics including “The True Meaning of Human Sexuality” and a Kid’s Movie Night on Saint Bernadette Soubirous.
There will also be a men’s seminar “A Goal Greater Than Myself” by the Men Alive group.
