STAFF and students at St Francis Xavier School, Runaway Bay, had an “eggciting” time in the lead up to Easter with the Gold Coast school transformed into “chicken city”.
During the last two weeks of term, each class from Prep to Year 7 became home to a pen full of newly hatched chickens.
Classes received an incubator containing 12-15 eggs and a pen with three chickens.
Chicken city co-ordinator and Year 7 teacher Kaye Vague said during the first week daily hatchings created excitement among students, teachers and parents, who watched as little chicks pecked their way into the world.
She said the hatched chicks gained strength in the incubator before being transferred to the pen.
Ms Vague said it was the third “chicken city eggstravaganza” at St Francis Xavier and its popularity with students, parents and teachers ensured it would continue every second year.
She said Year 7 students held a giant egg drop competition, designing and building a container to protect an egg dropped from a second storey verandah, and there were chicken drawing and colouring competitions, chicken art and craft, chicken poetry and story writing, egg experiments in science and daily measuring, recording and graphing of the growth of chickens by students.
