THE bell tower at St John the Baptist Church, Enoggera, is set to make way for the redevelopment of a major new intersection on Brisbane’s northside.
Under the plans, the bell will be relocated closer to the church as the lanes leading into the intersection are widened.
Brisbane City Council works to upgrade the Alderley fiveways have started and the 10m high belfry, on the corner of South Pine and Sicklefield Rds, will be knocked down some time after Easter.
The Alderley roundabout has been a “black spot” for many years as well as being a major traffic congestion point during peak hours.
St John the Baptist Church and belfry were built as a war memorial in 1960.
The church is the focal point of an active parish led by Fr Stephen Byrnes.
