BRISBANE Archbishop John Bathersby asked a packed lunchtime congregation to learn from the mistakes of the past, when he led a Mass for Peace to mark the first anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks on the United States.
In his homily in St Stephen’s Cathedral, Archbishop Bathersby said that throughout history things had improved for humanity but much had stayed the same.
He pointed to education and health, the rights of women and children, world poverty and the environment.
‘Yet sadly the killing goes on,’ the archbishop said.
He told the congregation the world had changed over the past 3000 years but still the belief that killing innocent people to promote political or religious beliefs prevailed.
He said without wisdom humans would continue to make the mistakes of the past.
‘In the getting of wisdom are we really any wiser than we were 3000 years ago?’
‘I doubt it, and yet in the midst of our despair shine moments of hope that encourage us all.’
