Lourdes residents declared ‘Reserve Champions’ at the Royal Show

There were some proud winners at this year’s Royal Show, with residents from Lourdes Home for the Aged taking home an impressive selection of prizes, including the Reserve Champions Award.

The Show Society’s ‘Inter-Home Challenge’ competition calls for craft, woodwork, cooking and plant entries from Residential Aged Care residents throughout the region.

Lourdes Home for the Aged embraced the challenge and both male and female residents were encouraged to get involved.

Lifestyle Support Coordinator, Pat Verdel, said the competition created a lot of interest and enjoyment.

“It was a fabulous way for our residents to showcase their craft work and cooking skills,” she said.

Members of the Lourdes Craft Group came together regularly to work on their entries and they developed a strong bond in the process.

“Friendships grew as residents shared ideas and helped each other. Participating in this competition made them feel connected – to each other and the wider community,” said Pat.

For the residents, the outing to the Show was the cherry on the cake. Not only were they extremely proud to see their creations on display, they also enjoyed experiencing the sights and sounds of this major community event.

“Many of our residents have a strong connection with the Royal Show from way back. It was a pleasure to see them feel a part of this community tradition that means so much to them,” said Pat Verdel.

Resident Carol Grundy was amongst the winners.

“I’ve always been good at craft activities and I think my painting looked terrific. Winning the ribbon was great fun!” she said.

Loures Home for the Aged has proudly displayed the ribbons and certificates for all the residents and visitors to see.

Judging by resident Pat Mulhall’s comments, next year’s competition promises to be even bigger.

“I got such a lot of inspiration looking at the wonderful entries from the other homes. I’ve already got ideas for what I can make next year.”
