THE Sisters of St Joseph are hoping to raise community awareness of the plight of Australia’s indigenous people to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Alice Springs in October.
They have released a kit called “The Hour has Come – Working Towards a Justly Reconciled Australia”.
The kit bases its reflections on the words of Pope John Paul II to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Alice Springs in 1986.
Queensland Josephite provincial leader Sr Margaret Robertson said the coming 20th anniversary of the address provided people with a unique and timely opportunity to focus on the words of Pope John Paul and to reconsider them in the light of recent concerns about conditions in remote indigenous communities and the disadvantages of indigenous people’s lives generally.
The kit can be obtained from the Queensland Josephite Administration Centre by phoning (07) 3266 1300.
It is being released across Australia.
