A TREASURED church object – St Mary MacKillops’s pilgrimage cross – is now on display in Brisbane’s St Stephen’s Cathedral.
The cross is one of a pair made by the Knights of the Southern Cross from floor timbers of St Mary MacKillop’s first school in Penola, South Australia, established in the 1860s.
The other cross was presented to Pope John Paul II during his open-air Mass at Randwick, Sydney in 1986.
The cross now on display in St Stephen’s Blessed Sacrament Chapel was presented to the Archbishop of Sydney, Edward Cardinal Clancy.
This cross remained in St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, for many years and played a key role in the beatification ceremonies for St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
It is on loan from Sydney Archdiocese and will remain on display in St Stephen’s up to and including Sunday, March 20.
The Knights of the Southern Cross adopted St Mary of the Cross MacKillop as their patron.
As part of centenary celebrations for KSC Queensland the Knights will also launch a history book this month and hold a centenary conference to discuss issues of current concern to the Church and Australian society.
