A RIGHT to Life demonstration in Brisbane last Saturday went to plan despite police having to restrain a group of 50 pro-choice protestors.
About 500 people assembled for the Respect for Women Rally in Queen’s Park at 1.30pm, but their 2pm start was only delayed several minutes by the rowdy bunch who ambushed the stage.
Queensland Right to Life president Teresa Martin said the ruckus was more advantageous than disturbing.
“Firstly they created media attention, secondly it showed passers-by the stark contrast between our behaviour and theirs, and then once police had them under control they were forced to listen quietly to what we had to say,” she said.
Ms Martin said the key message at the rally was for women to respect themselves and follow their hearts when making decisions.
“Women’s hearts speak nurture, they speak love, they speak protection, and so if women follow their hearts they are not going to destroy the life of their young child.”
Ms Martin also said the rally was a call for politicians to recognise the number of Queenslanders who are against the de-regulation of abortion.
Queensland Right to Life will have its biennial conference on June 21 at Parliament House.
Its keynote speakers will be Bobby Schindler and Suzanne Vitadamo, brother and sister of Terry Schindler Schiavo, the brain-damaged 41-year-old from Florida whose feeding tubes were removed in 2005.
