A PROJECT to restore an historic mural in St Joseph’s Church, Kangaroo Point will be launched at an open day on October 12.
The mural is one of the few examples of the ecclesiastical art from the 1940s in Brisbane.
It was painted by Brisbane artist James Wieneke in 1948.
Many parishioners still remember it being painted and it has been a unique feature of the church since.
The parish community has formed Mural Mates, a group to help document the mural’s history and plan for its restoration.
One of the Mural Mates, Patricia Pryor, said that sadly the mural was showing signs of disintegration and action to restore it was needed urgently.
‘We want to restore it so that it can be a source of joy and inspiration for future generations,’ she said.
The church, in Leopard St, will be open on October 12 from 2pm-4pm.
