TWENTY Queensland priests, including one bishop, celebrating jubilees this year can count a total of 855 years of priestly service to the Church.
The clergy, who celebrate 25, 40, 50, 60 and 65 years as priests, walked into St Stephen’s Cathedral for the Presbyteral Jubilee Mass on June 25, followed by 70 of their fellow priests and bishops.
Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge concelebrated the Mass with Bishop Brian Finnigan and Bishop Joseph Oudeman.
Archbishop Coleridge said a priest signed “a blank cheque” when saying yes to the priesthood.
He greeted each priest and thanked them individually for their service to the Church.
Bishop John Gerry, a retired auxiliary bishop for Brisbane, has been a priest for 65 years, while retired Cairns diocesan priest Fr Ivan Hernon and Redemptorist Father Keith Teefey celebrate 60 years in the priesthood.
Golden jubilarians included Fr Jim Browne, Fr Dan Grundy, Fr Peter McCartin, Fr Terry Moynihan, Fr Dick Pascoe, Fr Bernard Wilson, and Marist Fathers Harry Moore and Michael Mullins.
Celebrating 25 years were Fr John Conway, Franciscan Friar Stephen Bliss, Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament Father Joseph Kanatt, Salesian Father Ambrose Pereira, Passionist Father David King and Carmelite of Mary Immaculate Father Antony Vadakara.
Fr John Khoai, Fr Orm Rush and Carmelite Father Paul Chandler have all been priests for 40 years.
