Pastoral letter on wonder of Eucharist

AUSTRALIA’S Catholic bishops have issued a pastoral letter on ‘The Wonder of the Eucharist’ to coincide with the celebration of the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) on June 13.

Pope John Paul II, during the bishops’ ad limina visit to Rome in March, called for them to be ‘fearless’ in the face of secularism and to renew their efforts in promoting the celebration of Sunday Mass.

This pastoral letter is part of their response to that call. The bishops decided at their plenary meeting in Sydney last month to issue the letter.

A broad renewal and education on the Eucharist was a focus of the bishops’ meeting.

They start their pastoral letter by acknowledging it is beyond them ‘to find the words to describe the sheer greatness of God’s gift to the human race in the Eucharist’.

The bishops urge us to always do our very best to allow the gift of the Eucharist to penetrate our lives.
