A CHURCH worker who exposed abuses against refugees at the Woomera Detention Centre in South Australia has pledged to continue his campaign, and believes the outcry is achieving results.
Centacare Adelaide director Dale West said: “I’m talking about people who are at risk and people who are being abused.
“I’m so confident about the information we’re receiving. It is coming from so many relia8ble sources.”
Centacare revealed the sexual and physical abuse of women and children at Woomera in late November.
It has since revealed that children have been handcuffed and kept in solitary confinement in what Mr West describes as “a culture of abuse”.
He noted that abuses had also been reported at the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney.
“A former inmate, who comes across as creditable, has described a regime and events there that are similar to those at Woomera,” Mr West said.
“Malcolm Fraser’s description of Woomera as a ‘hell hole’ which should be shut down has helped. He is one of a number of other individuals and groups who are speaking up now.”
