THE organisers of 40 Days For Life prayer campaigns around the world similar to one which starts in Brisbane on Tuesday have claimed the closure of 20 abortion centres as signs of success.

Campaign organiser Brendan Wong hopes it will soon be Brisbane’s turn “for similar victories” when a prayer vigil continues throughout the 40 days of Lent outside a Bowen Hills abortion clinic.

He called for volunteers to take hourly slots on a 24-hour-a-day prayer roster at the clinic.

“The Brisbane campaigns which are inter-denominational have been running for four years now,” he said.

“It’s very important for all people opposed to abortion to join with us in the campaign.

“By our prayer vigil which runs 24 hours a day, we’d like to draw people’s attention to the harm being done by abortion.

“At the moment there’s a lot of apathy about the issue.”
Communities in Australia will join with more than 200 cities in Ireland, United States and Canada hosting 40 Days for Life events throughout Lent.

The 40 Days for Life campaign was started in 2004 by a pro-life group in Texas, United States.

Brisbane’s campaign objectives were presented on January 31 at the “Cast the Vision” evening.

Mr Wong announced the theme of this year’s vigil was “compassion for all those involved in abortion”.

He referred to the scripture, “forgive them, they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34) and asked all those involved to keep this scripture in mind over the 40 days of the vigil.

The campaign will have a “kick-off rally” from 7-9pm at the Emmaus Centre in Paddington on Tuesday (February 21).
