THE Emmanuel Covenant Community is holding a silent prayer for peace vigil every night in King George Square in Brisbane until Good Friday.
The Emmanuel Covenant Community is a Brisbane based Catholic charismatic community which seeks to embrace a life of holiness, to live a committed Christian lifestyle and engage in the work of evangelisation.
A group from the community has been meeting in the square from 7.30pm -8.30pm since last Saturday, to spend an hour in silent prayer for peace.
The group has erected a large cross more than two metres tall as a focus for their prayer, and a sign that it is only in and through Jesus Christ that there can be peace.
One of the organisers, Luke Plant, said 12 people turned up to pray on the first night, with individuals sitting, standing or kneeling.
He said several people also stopped momentarily as they passed through the square to join the group in prayer.
Hannah Harris, who came along on the first night, said she believed prayer was the most effective way to bring good out of the war in Iraq.
‘I felt encouraged by other believers putting their trust in God as well, and experienced great peace through that,’ she said.
