A SYNOD of the Church in Brisbane in 2003 is one of seven far-reaching initiatives announced by Archbishop John Bathersby on July 25 to “assist the archdiocese come alive as an evangelising archdiocese”.
He made the announcement at a special evening called Beyond Jubilee – Setting Hearts on Fire. The initiatives will carry on the momentum of the Jubilee year and last year’s Hearts on Fire national conference on evangelisation, which the archdiocese organised and hosted.
Archbishop Bathersby told clergy, religious and laity gathered in Mayne Hall, St Lucia, that the synod would be “the most significant” of the steps he was announcing to take the archdiocese “into a new phase of life and mission”.
“It will involve an enormous amount of detailed planning that I hope will involve the input of all Catholics,” he said.
“Out of the planning will come the key issues we need to address if we are to be the sign of the Kingdom for the society in which we live.”
