A NEW school to be opened in Bucasia, North Mackay, next year will be called St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School.

Rockhampton Catholic Education director Leesa Jeffcoat announced the name on May 7.

Then diocesan administrator Fr John Grace chose the name after extensive community consultation.

Miss Jeffcoat said this was exciting for Catholic education in Mackay where the first Catholic school was founded in 1872 and the most recent Catholic primary school – MacKillop at Andergrove – opened in the region in 1995.

She said she was delighted with the progress the new school’s steering committee had made towards having St Brendan’s on target to open for the beginning of the 2015 school year.

“I thank those in the North Mackay parish and in the Catholic Education and wider community who participated in the consultation process for the naming of St Brendan’s and who have made such a wonderful contribution in advancing the planning for the new school,” Miss Jeffcoat said.

The foundation principal and staff for the new school will be appointed during the second half of this year.

Parents interested in enrolling their children in the new school should contact the Northern Region assistant director of schools Michael McCusker through the Diocesan Catholic Education Office in Rockhampton on (07) 4931 3600 or email

Enrolments will open from the beginning of Term Three this year, with Prep enrolments being conducted from July 21-25.

Enrolments will be taken for students from Prep to Year 6.
