BURLEIGH Heads parishioners on the Gold Coast celebrated the laying of a foundation stone for their new Mary, Mother of Mercy Church on March 6.
Standing atop Marymount where the Church will be built, apostolic nuncio Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, blessed the foundation stone and prayed for the safety of workers during construction.
Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge attended, as well as parish priest Fr Ken Howell.
About 900 people participated in a combined parish Mass in the Doyle Centre at the nearby Marymount College, and then walked in procession to the new church site for the blessing ceremony.
The foundation stone is cut from Helidon sandstone donated by the Stephens family.
Fr Howell said the Church was due for completion towards the end of this year.
