THE National Council of Churches National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ecumenical Commission (NATSIEC) has called for a free and democratic Zimbabwe after learning of the atrocities perpetrated in the African nation.
Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube from Zimbabwe visited the National Council of Churches this month and briefed them on the problems that beset Zimbabwe.
NATSIEC executive secretary Graeme Mundine said in a statement it was evident that there was a problem with the lack of democratic process in the country.
“Zimbabwe is also experiencing large scale poverty within the country, which particularly affects our Indigenous brothers and sisters,” he said.
NATSIEC has asked its representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Peter Smith, to make representations on the issue of Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, Catholic Mission said, despite the hostile environment in Zimbabwe, Catholic Mission was still working towards aiding the poor, starving and the needy.
A priest working for Catholic Mission in Zimbabwe, who cannot be named for his own personal safety, said “security-wise” the situation was getting tense following a pastoral letter issued by Zimbabwe’s bishops during Holy Week.
