ARCHBISHOP John Bathersby of Brisbane formally launched a multi-million dollar Mater redevelopment program on April 26, blessing foundation stones for a new Mater Children’s Hospital at South Brisbane and a Mater private clinic and hospital in the Redlands area.
The new Mater Children’s Hospital is a $65 million project, and will open later this year. It is stage one in the Mater’s overall $220 million redevelopment plan. The $36 million Mater clinic, to open in 2001, is stage two.
The seven-storey structure will have medical suites and new and expanded Mater private hospital facilities, linked to the main private hospital by an elevated walkway.
The Mater Private Hospital-Redland, to open in September, will be the shire’s first acute private hospital. It will offer specialised medical and surgical services, a day surgery unit, operating theatres and specialist medical suites.
