The Sisters of Mercy continued their celebration of 150 years of Living Mercy in Queensland with a climb of Brisbane’s Story Bridge on May 18.
Mercy Sisters representatives, along with staff and students from All Hallows’ School, Brisbane, participants from other Mercy Ministries and Archbishop John Bathersby of Brisbane completed the climb.
In 2011, Archbishop Bathersby is celebrating 25 years as a bishop, 50 years of priesthood and a 75th birthday – all adding up to 150 – so he was invited to join the sisters and their ministry partners in a celebration 80m above the Brisbane River overlooking the sisters’ first ministry in Brisbane – All Hallows’ School.
Project officer for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Sisters of Mercy in Queensland Andrew Beiers said the two-hour trip was well worth it as the top of the bridge held fascinating views of the landscape, and the guides shared varied tales and historical memories about the story of Brisbane.
“The adventurous climbers thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we gathered together on the top of the bridge to take a photograph with All Hallows’ School in the background in this important year of Living Mercy,” he said.
