ARCHBISHOP John Bathersby launched Catholic Earthcare Australia in Brisbane archdiocese on World Environment Day, June 5.
The launch at Marymount College, Burleigh Waters was also attended by the executive officer of Catholic Earthcare Australia, Colin Brown, and leading supporters of environmental conversion from a number of archdiocesan groups.
These included Brisbane Catholic Education and the Queensland Catholic Education Commission, the archdiocesan Catholic Justice and Peace Commission, religious congregational leaders of Queensland, student representatives from several Brisbane schools, students from Marymount College and Cool Communities participants from Burleigh Heads Parish.
The Queensland Environment Council was also represented.
Mr Brown said Catholic Earthcare Australia was established in late 2002 by the Australian Catholic bishops in response to the Pope’s call for ecological conversion.
Archbishop Bathersby said only in more recent years has the Catholic Church become intensly interested in environmental matters.
He said to be successful, passion for the environment needed to go hand in hand with Scripture and the sacraments of the Church.
