SIXTY-five-year-old Ferny Grove woman Lee MacFarlane thought she’d play it safe during last Sunday’s Brisbane storm and shelter in the carpark at St Peter Chanel School where her two grandchildren are students.
The decision nearly proved disastrous when a large tree crashed onto her car soon after she pulled into the carpark.
Mrs MacFarlane’s daughter Michelle, of Ferny Hills, whose two children Taylor and Morgan attend the school, said it was a miracle her mother had survived.
“She was on her way back home from a felting class at Toowong when she got caught up in the storm,” Michelle said.
“Mum decided to take cover in the pick-up area at the school.
“The hail was just starting to ease so she opened the car door and started to wriggle out, looking for somewhere more substantial to shelter.
“That’s when the tree came down, crushing the bus shelter first and then her car.”
Michelle said somebody who saw the car after the incident believed her mother would not have survived if she had been sitting completely in the driver’s seat.
“One thing is for sure – it could have been horrific.
“We’re so thankful to have her back at home.”
