A NUMBER of poor families in Vietnam will receive welcome gifts of pigs thanks to fundraising efforts by staff and students at St Bernardine’s School, Regents Park.
This follows the presentation of a cheque for more than $2700 to Caritas on April 20 after the school’s involvement in the Pigitas project.
Assistant principal for religious education Damian Gambley said it was a fantastic effort by staff and students.
“About $220 will enable a family to buy and raise four pigs,” he said.
“It was very much driven by the students and we thought 24 pigs was a good target.
“But we managed to more than double that, which is a great effort by the students.”
Mr Gambley said staff encouraged students to bring in their contributions daily.
“We are proud of the fact that the Catholic understanding of giving to others and social justice is alive at this school, and that the children are taking on with great enthusiasm.”
