ABOUT 1000 people rallied in Brisbane last weekend to send a pro-life message to Queensland politicians who may soon be asked to consider changes to abortion legislation.
People of all ages from around south-east Queensland attended the Cherish Life Queensland Rally for Life at Queens Park in the Brisbane CBD on February 7.
Cherish Life Queensland president Teresa Martin said many people were “surprised” to hear of recent changes in Victoria, legalising abortion up to 24 weeks.
“Most people didn’t know (of the legislation change),” Ms Martin said.
At the rally, Ms Martin described the changes in Victoria as a “horror story” and said she hoped such changes did not “happen in Queensland”.
Queensland legislation allows abortion before 22 weeks if the woman is at risk of death from the pregnancy.
Ms Martin said “it was absolutely wonderful to see so many young people” at the rally.
“They (young people) are our future … They are our future politicians … It is important to get pro-life politicians elected,” she said.
Ms Martin gave “full credit” to rally guest speaker Dr Belinda Goodwin, wife and mother of five (expecting her sixth child).
She encouraged people to contact the association via rally@cherishlife.org.au to form part of a database concerning other rallies.
Meanwhile, Brendan Wong, of “40daysforlife”, is preparing to launch Brisbane’s first 40-day, pro-life prayer campaign. This will be part of a campaign to be held “in and around 115 cities” globally.
