His funeral Mass was held in Little Flower Church, Kedron, on September 17, with Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Oudeman presiding and Franciscan provincial Fr Paul Smith concelebrating.

Various Australian bishops sent messages of condolence while many in the Franciscan community were in attendance.

Kedron parish priest Franciscan Father Peter Clifford said Fr Double was “diagnosed with a form of cancer that gradually wore him away”.

“He was a real character,” Fr Clifford said.

“He had done many things in his life … (but) Bishop John Gerry said he was amazed Fr Cassian died in a bed and not in a motorcycle accident.”

The Catholic Leader featured Fr Double in People in April last year.

The Mater chaplain had diarised every hospital visit over the two decades and years earlier ministered among the indigenous people on Palm Island, near Townsville, and on Fantome Island within a leprosarium.

Another member of the Franciscans, Br Francis (Adrian) Erni, who had taught at Padua College, Kedron, died this month.
