AFTER a 27-year battle, Brisbane Christian radio station Family Radio 96.5 FM has finally won permission to stay on air.
The station, which has the support of all the major Churches in Brisbane, received word on August 31 that it had been awarded a permanent community broadcasting licence on the same frequency it has been using until now on a temporary licence – 96.5 FM.
Station manager Haydn Sargent said the initial feeling was one of relief that, after all this time, the station had finally been granted a permanent licence.
‘When I joined the board in July 1995 I asked ‘what can I do?’ Someone said, ‘Help us get a licence’. I’ve been working on that ever since,’ he said.
‘One of the big factors that helped us win the licence was the fact that we had the support of all the Churches.’
Family Radio beat five other applicants for the new licence, including two dance music consortiums.
