CATHOLIC, Jewish and Muslim leaders in Melbourne have united to oppose terrorism.
Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart; President of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria, Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant and General Secretary of the Board of Imams of Victoria, Sheikh Fehmi Naji El-Imam have signed a statement expressing opposition to ‘terrorism, hatred and bigotry in all forms’.
The statement read: ‘As religious leaders in the Victorian community, we offer our sincere condolences and sympathies to the families and friends of those affected by terrorism around the world.’
It also condemned and rejected the use of fear, intimidation and threat as political weapons.
‘We believe we all come from God, and as such, all of mankind, regardless of race, creed or religion should be valued and treated with love, dignity and respect.’
The faith leaders said despite continuing international tension and conflict there remained more to unite them than to divide them.
They gathered to seal the statement on July 15 at Flinders St station in Melbourne.
