PORTLAND, Oregon (CNS): The new America’s Junior Miss is a member of St Edward Catholic parish in Keizer who sings with enthusiasm at liturgies and takes sandwiches to homeless people living under Salem bridges.
On June 28 in Mobile, Alabama, Amy Kerr, Oregon’s Junior Miss, was chosen the winner in the national scholarship contest, which is open to female high school seniors who are going to college.
Ms Kerr, 18, who won a total of $160,000 in college grants, will go to for Willamette University in Salem later this year.
As an active member of the St Edward youth group, Ms Kerr recently went on a service trip to Mexico. She also has helped lead the parish’s junior-high youth group.
Perhaps even more than service, sacred song fires her up.
Music is one of my favourite things in life, and the feeling I get when I am praising God with the voice he has blessed me with is so amazing,’ she told the Catholic Sentinel, newspaper of the Portland Archdiocese.
