DANGER is ever present for war correspondent Michael Ware who is on the frontline in Iraq, and so are the prayers of his parents and friends in Brisbane.
Ware, who is reporting the war from northern Iraq for Time magazine, has received special mention for prayers in Grovely and Mitchelton parishes, where his parents, Len and Gail Ware, are regulars among the congregation.
He is with Kurdish troops and is based in Sulaymaniyah, which is on the road to the major oil centre of Kirkuk.
Reporting from the thick of battle, Ware has been giving updates each afternoon on ABC Radio in Brisbane.
And he has been witnessing the fighting at close quarters.
Len and Gail, who have been parishioners at St William’s, Grovely for about 30 years, regularly hear from their son.
His father said he worried about Michael all the time ‘because he’s under constant fire’.
Len, who listens to all of Michael’s radio reports, heard during one interview of how Michael and the troops he was with were pinned down and had been under fire for about six hours.
Ware, 32, has had experience reporting from battles in Afghanistan, East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
He grew up in Grovely parish and attended St William’s Primary School.
