BRIGIDINE College students are amongst the first-ever group to start high school in Year 7 in Queensland this week.

The Indooroopilly college community has been preparing for the historic change.

New Middle Years learning facilities have been built to provide engaging opportunities for lifelong learning in the classroom. Outside the classroom, things have been happening too.

Since October, they have been playing in the under 13B Brisbane Water Polo competition representing Brigidine College.

Part of training regime has also seen them interacting with Brigidine’s 8-12 students as they also enjoy the swimming program.

“Since last year, Brigidine’s 2015 Year 7 and 8s have made many new friends within their team and also in the wider College student body,” Brigidine sports co-ordinator Kay Roy said.

“Through this sporting experience, the Year 7 and 8s have had a taste of some high school challenges already.  They have transitioned into our community before even stepping into the classroom.”

And after four years of preparation, Brisbane Catholic Education secondary colleges are ready to make history when they welcome 6100 new Year 7 students.

It will not only be the first year of secondary for the 2015 Year 7 students, it will also be the first year for almost 3000 Year 8 students in 2015.

BCE executive director Pam Betts said Brisbane Catholic Education was committed to ensuring people are the focus of this historic change.

“Our secondary colleges are very keen to involve parents in their child’s education and parents in many of our colleges have received regular communications,” she said.

“The old saying, it takes a village to raise a child, is harder to do in our modern society, but our Catholic secondary colleges are ready to be a village for their new families.”
