STUDENTS at St Andrew’s School, Ferny Grove, went for a walk around their school and in the process raised more than $14,000 for the St Vincent de Paul Society and Rosies.
The money from the school’s Walk for Justice will help support the good works the two organisations do in the local community.
The whole school walked for an hour around the outskirts of the school grounds.
Year 6 students ran stalls along the course, including music motivation, justice art work, justice quiz, games and physical activities, water stations and lollies.
Parish priest Fr Frank Lourigan cut the ribbon to officially begin the walkathon while many parents tagged along and joined in the fun.
Year 6 student Tess McArdle said they decided on the walkathon to raise awareness for social justice in the community, especially for the two organisations, because they showed social justice in our society by using their time to talk to the homeless, distribute food and help those who were struggling.
“Our school believes that everyone should be shown social justice by being treated equally and fairly,” she said.
“Since we believe this we have decided to do something about it and this is where the walkathon comes in.
“Our aim is to raise awareness by getting people to think about the difficulties others experience by doing something that is difficult for them.”
Year 6 teacher Ellen Locke said each class raised money through donations. The highest amount was raised by a Year 1 class with $1325.
The school is hoping the justice walkathon will become an annual event.
