LOURDES Hill College principal Robyn Anderson was proud of the blankets her staff and students had knitted for Brisbane’s homeless and vulnerable people this year.
The blankets were part of a middle school project that has run for the last nine years, Blankets for Brisbane.
This year, Lourdes Hill handed out 40 blankets to those in need.
At the launch of the event, Soubirous Place – named after St Bernadette Soubirous – was teeming with purple, the college’s standout colour.
Students and staff worked together, knitting or learning how to knit squares that would be joined to make blankets.
Ms Anderson said the project was built on the college’s values of peace, kindness, love and helping those in need.
“Values, which the Good Samaritan Sisters embedded in the College 105-years ago and, values that are woven into Lourdes Hill’s daily life,” she said.
Deputy principal middle school Cathy Hains said the college realised the project helped more than just those in need – it connected people.
“Blankets for Brisbane gave students, especially those new to the school, a common purpose, a place to come at lunchtime, connect with others, make friends, and enjoy a laugh while knitting for those in need,” she said.
Every year, parents and grandparents as well as the wider community joined the students in knitting for those in need.
