ST Kieran’s School, Brighton, and Sacred Heart School, Sandgate, held a meet-and-greet for students as part of parish celebrations for the state and archdiocese’s 150th birthday.
Prep-to-Year 3 students got to know each other at St Kieran’s through fun and games while Year 4-7 students met at Sacred Heart for a day of activities.
It was part of a whole week of celebrations in the parish that included the launch of a parish booklet and the two school choirs coming together to sing at Sunday Mass followed by a parish picnic.
Parish pastoral worker Mercy Sister Val Cuthbert said the school meet-and-greet connected to the 150th celebrations through a parish expo which showcased different groups in the Sandgate-Brighton parish.
She said it was important to have the schools included in the expo as they were a vital part of the parish “here and now”. During the week-long expo the combined schools’ choirs also visited parish aged-care facilities and entertained the residents.
“It was a real parish celebration,” she said.
St Kieran’s principal Charlotte Robinson said the day was fantastic and students and staff enjoyed meeting and greeting each other.
“The younger children had so many activities here (at St Kieran’s) they could access,” she said.
“Over at Sacred Heart the older children enjoyed different sporting activities and the chaplain from St John Fisher College came down and rehearsed songs with them for our Parish Expo Mass on Sunday.
“We had students walking around holding each others hands so they were making that connection and that was important.”
Sacred Heart assistant principal for religious education John Brown said all the students enjoyed themselves and it was great to see the two schools making a friendship connection.
