A YEAR 12 student from Mt Maria College, Enoggera/Mitchelton, has been named Brisbane City Council School-based Apprentice of the Year.
Matthew Hansen received a certificate and $500, sponsored by Worklinks, from Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman during a ceremony at Brisbane City Hall on March 12.
Matthew, who is undertaking a Certificate III in automotive (heavy vehicle road transport) with Brisbane City Council, began his vocational training in Year 10.
His success followed a nomination by his supervisor and a subsequent interview process.
Mt Maria College’s vocational education department kept up its great record in taking out top awards through its hard-working students when two former students were also awarded an Australian Vocational Student Prize of $2000 from the Federal Government for the second year in a row.
The Australian Vocational Student Prize is awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate exceptional skill, commitment and achievement while undertaking a Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools program or a school-based new apprenticeship.
Mt Maria student Elizabeth Gooley received the Vocational Student Prize and Nicole Harradine (school captain in 2006) received her award as a school-based apprentice.
Principal Stephen Cook said the awards recognised the exceptional achievements of the individual students and were a reflection of the quality of the vocational education program offered at the college and the opportunities it offered students.
